SENIOR SERVICES and PROGRAMS
MEALS On WHEELS
As a part of our mission of Service for Seniors, the Frisbie Senior Center is assuming responsibility for the Des Plaines Meals on Wheels (Home Delivered Meals) program from the city.
Important Information
The transition date is March 1, 2010.
There will be no interruption in service for current participants.
The current meal provider will continue to prepare the meals.
Current participants and volunteers will receive additional information in February 2010.
Anyone with questions or any senior who would like to participate should contact Dennis Rosa at 847-768-5944.

Programs and Services
All Programs will be at the Frisbie Senior Center from now on, with the exception of the Veteran’s Affairs Officer who will stay at Prairie Lakes for now. These services are provided in privacy through the
cooperation of community members who volunteer their time and expertise.

- MEAT & EAT PROGRAM - Don't like to cook? Tired of eating meals by yourself?
Want to make new friends? Like a daily meal cost that won't break your bank?
Then contact the Project Coordinator, at the Frisbie Senior Center to join our daily program. Our delicious, cost - controlled meals are served Monday through Friday at Cumberland Café inside the Frisbie Senior Center. Just call (847) 768-9505to get started “Meeting & Eating”.
We are always trying to improve the Meet & Eat Program. If you would like to learn more about the program or offer ideas for continued improvement, we invite you to attend a meeting of the Cuisine Team. The Cuisine Team are participants of the program who are interested in sharing their ideas. They meet the 2nd Monday of every month at the Frisbie Senior Center from 2:30 - 3:00 pm. We hope you can join us.
- ASK A NURSE - The first Friday of each month 9 - 10 a.m. - Sponsored by Best Care Home Health. A nurse will be available to answer your personal questions about your medical concerns. The nurses name is Bridgette Oparah. No appointment necessary.
- Ask a Acupuncturist – The Third Friday of every month from 10AM to Noon. A licensed acupuncturist from Natural Healing Acupuncture Clinic will answer you questions about acupuncture and pulse analysis.. Appointments not necessary, but recommended.
- ASK A CARE MANAGER - First Friday each month from 10-11am. Successful aging sometimes means navigating through uncharted territory. A Geriatric Care Manager can help by providing resources to age safely on your terms. Noreen Coussens, CMC from Partners in Senior Care will be available to answer your questions. Appointments not necessary, but preferred.
- ASK A DEMENTIA EXPERT - Thursday of each month from 9:30 to 11:30am sponsored by Arden Courts. Ask any questions you might have regarding dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. Appointments not necessary, but preferred.
- ASK THE NATURAL DOCTOR - Last Friday of each month - 11:00 AM to 12:00 noon
A doctor from the Des Plaines Chiropractic Center will answer your questions about natural health care and perform screenings. No appointment necessary.
- ASK the PHYSICAL THERAPIST – 2nd Tuesday of every month – 12:30-2:30PM (FC) – A licensed physical therapist from Creative Therapy Resource, Ltd will be available to answer any questions you may have about physical therapy, painful joints, difficulty walking, general fitness, or safety concerns. Appointments not necessary, but appreciated.
- BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK - 2nd and 4th Thursdays at Frisbie Senior Center. - 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM
A Public Health nurse is available to check blood pressure. No appointment necessary.
- COMPANION SERVICE ADT (Formerly) - now - LIFELINE PROGRAM - Lifeline means on your own, but not alone! Please contact Alyse Cohen-Burman at 847-561-9279 or Paula Levy at 847-561-9282 for more information on this life-saving product.
- COMMUNITY INFORMATION - second Thursday each month - 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM
Information on Des Plaines City Services plus assistance with Medicare and Circuit Breaker forms. Taxi cab discount cards can also be obtained.

- DAILY at AMERICA UNITED BANK Every 1st & 3rd Monday of each month at 9am. Located in the parking lot of the Frisbie Senior Center You’re welcome to come and ask the banker any banking question you may have and never had the opportunity to ask. Your session will be confidential with a banker you can trust. No RSVP needed, free service. Sponsored by America United Bank.
- DENTAL CONSULTATION AND EXAM - third Wednesday each month
- 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM Dr. Barry will be at the center providing dental exams. Disclaimer: This is only a consultation, no dental work will be done on site.

Volunteers use their own cars to drive seniors to medical/dental appointments, wait for them and bring them home again, stopping at the pharmacy if necessary on the way home. Seniors must be able to get in and out of a car without physical assistance. Portable, foldable walkers and wheelchairs are acceptable. A weeks notice is preferred. Ten dollar donations for each round trip will be accepted. Invoices will be sent the month after services are provided.
Our geographical boundaries are: Lake Cook Rd to the north, Biesterfield to the south, Greenwood at Lutheran General to the East, and Barrington Rd to the West. We have a few volunteers willing to go beyond these boundaries whenever they are available.

Free service. No obligation financial planning options and advice provided.
HEARING AID CLEANING AND CONSULTATION - 3rd Thursday each month - 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM Pre-registration suggested.
HOME HEALTH ASSITANCE – 4th Monday of each month – 1-2PM (FC) – John Matzek with Addus Healthcare will be available to help you with your home healthcare options based on your income and needs.
ILLINOIS SENIOR HELP LINE - If you need assistance on taxes, Medicare, elder abuse, community care or similar topics, call 1-800-252-8966 and you will be directed to someone who can help you.
LEGAL COUNSEL - second Friday of each month - 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Greg MacDonald, Attorney at Law, will discuss
options in personal and financial matters or make arrangements for drawing up wills or trusts. Don Smith, Attorney at Law will be available on the 4th Friday of the month from 9 - 11 AM.
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program - The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is again available to adults over 60 who qualify.
This refers to help with your heating bill. Income guidelines are as follows:

MEDICAL CLOSET - (FC) Monday thru Friday - 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Rent a variety of medical equipment from the Frisbie Center for only a $20 fee. Equipment can be rented for up to three months and includes canes, crutches, toilet
risings, and walkers. Wheelchairs are also available for $20 per month, $60 for three months.
MEDICARE INSURANCE – 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month – 11AM – 1PM (FC)– Matt Bogusz from Aetna Insurance will be available to answer any questions about Medicare Supplement plans you may have. Appointments not necessary, but appreciated.
NOTARY PUBLIC - Notary service will be available Mon-Fri at Frisbie Senior Center. Hours 8:30am to 4:00pm
PERSONAL COUNSELING - Every Thursday, Linda Kruse, a licensed social worker is available to talk confidentially regarding loneliness, ill health, family problems, stress or other difficulties. Call 847-784-6043 and ask for Linda Kruse. Arrangements will be made to meet you at the Senior
Center from 9:00 AM to Noon. Home visits can also be arranged.
PODIATRIST- Dr. Kibrit will continue to serve seniors by offering a special discount at his office located at 906 Rand Rd, Suite 226 in Des Plaines. He will trim toenails, corns & calluses. You can make an appointment with him at 847-699-8420.
Please mention the Frisbie Senior Center in order to get the discount. A limited amount of appointments will be available each month.
RESOURCE CENTER - 2nd & 4th Thursday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stella Noskinak from CJE Senior Life will help you with all your resource needs from Circuit Breakers to Medicare. Can assist both English and Russian-speaking clients. Call 773/508-1052 to make an appt at Frisbie Center.
RUSSIAN SPEAKING RESOURCE CENTER – 2nd & 4th Thursday - 9AM -3PM (PL)- Stella Noskina with CJE Senior Life, will be at Prairie Lakes each month to help Russian speaking individuals with their resource needs. Please call 773-508-1052 to make an appointment.
SENIOR EMPLOYMENT -
Operates at the Senior Center on a regular 2-days-a-week basis. The service is being staffed through CEDA Northwest employment counselor Sam Cory (Tuesdays 12pm to 4pm) and (Wednesdays 9am to 12pm). Contact: Senior

VETERANS AFFAIRS - - A Veteran Affairs Officer is available at the Des Plaines Community
Senior Center to meet with veterans and their families. - There Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday from 9AM-4PM. Her name is Cynthia McKee.
People should call ahead (847-294-4664) to make sure she is in the office before they come to see her.
Veteran’s Roundtable
10 AM - Frisbie 4th Friday.
You do not have to be a war hero to join in the discussion. All that is required is a dog-tag number. There are no dues just a Thank You Can for the coffee.
